Then you're in the right place!  Transitioning into a new career is certainly exciting and the world is full of opportunities for those who are committed entrepreneurs.  In the past 10 years, the United States has enjoyed a tremendous real estate boom and, so there's been quite a bit of interest in the real estate profession and, as a result, in licensing.

 

Talking to agents from across globe, it's fairly clear that there are a number of factors that contribute to someone's decision to choose real estate as a profession.  Here are the Top 10 reasons to choose real estate as a career.....

Barriers to entry are relatively low

One of the largest drawbacks to beginning a successful business is overcoming barriers to entry.  Barriers to entry include required licenses, start-up capital, fixed costs, operating costs, etc.  In Texas, you'll find that you normally have to take 6 required core classes, take your state exam, and you're there.  Classes and licensing fees are fairly minimal when comparing other businesses to real estate.  Of course, this business can get expensive, but it doesn't have to be that way if you begin on the right path.  As a result, there are very few barriers to entry for the real estate profession.

 

Rewards are relatively high

The rewards in this business come from knowing great people, working with superior clients, and of course, the income derived from successfully representing your clients.  For someone who's committed to the real estate profession and works full time, it's not unusual for a first-year agent to make over $100,000 in the first year.  Proper training plays a large part in your eventual income, as does the commitment you make to your business.  It's very difficult to find any other profession that will enable you to achieve such a high level of income in the first year, or any year for that matter.

 

Having the opportunity to own your own business

Many people dream of having their own business and most don't make it through the first year.  Growing your own business is not easy, and it requires time, money, and vision to see it through.  The real estate profession is no different.  The large majority of real estate practitioners work as independent contractors for their broker, so you're in business from day one.  If you haven't taken the time to think this step through, you need to do so before making the decision to enter the business.  Growing your own business is an exciting adventure for those who are flexible and committed enough to see it through. 

 

Improving control of your own time

This is a great one.  It seems the number one complaint among employees nationwide is the lack of control they have over their own time.  While it stands to reason that if you're working for someone else, they need to have control over their employees' time, it sure is difficult to realize that you've essentially sold your own life to someone else for a paycheck.  Agents who are successful, have control over their own time and they make their own decisions as to where their time will be spent.  Having better control of your time essentially enables you to get your life back, spend your time where it's most in demand, and puts you back in the driver's seat.  It's a nice feeling to be in charge of your own life.

 

Meeting great people

Having the opportunity to meet great people really is one of the best things about the real estate business.  As a professional, you'll spend your time networking with clients in just about every profession imaginable.  You'll also network with lenders, title companies, surveyors, home inspectors, contractors, attorneys, accountants, financial planners, and the list goes on.  All great people to know, no matter what line of work you're in.  Real estate becomes a way of life, and the time you invest in your clients and other affiliates, comes back to you along the way.

 

Spending more time with family

This can be a sensitive issue, and it's one of the main reasons people choose to enter this field.  Family is important.  You can choose other professions where you lose your time or end up traveling 8 months out of the year -- all things that take you away from your family.  If you're family-oriented, real estate can be one of the best professions available, no matter where you live.  You're in charge of your own time.  If you want to spend it with family or loved ones, then spend it.  If you want to work instead, that opportunity is there as well.  You make the decisions.

 

The ability to travel more frequently

Some people love to travel, and some don't.  If you're the kind of person who loves to travel, there are opportunities provided for that in this profession.  Working as part of a team, it's possible to arrange your schedule to accommodate your travel goals.  Depending on which specialty you choose, you can also work from just about anywhere (we'll talk more about that below).  This profession enables you the freedom to be who you want to be, where you want to be.  As part of your personal development program, you'll also be encouraged to attend conventions and specialized training in various cities and states.  The opportunities are there for you.

 

More opportunities for personal growth and development

Like any other profession, if you're not on your way up, you're on your way out.  I don't think you'll find a single successful real estate practitioner anywhere who doesn't invest at least an hour a day in personal development of some kind.  It could be reading, training, attending a seminar, or whatever you choose.  Whatever your decision, you'll find that increased personal growth and development are productive byproducts of the profession.

 

The ability to work from anywhere

How much would it be worth to you to be able to work from anywhere in the United States?  It's a very big plus to be able to say, "I think we'll move here."  and actually be able to do it.  Different licensing requirements exist in every state, so you'll need to keep up with those, but essentially, you can work from anywhere.  In addition, you can also work from just about any physical location you choose, whether that's at home, your office, on the road while traveling.  There really are very few limits.  Freedom is precious thing.

 

Most importantly, it pays you exactly what you're worth

Okay, we've all seen it and probably experienced it too.  Someone always seems to be paid more than their worth while you're the one who's actually doing all the work.  In the real estate profession, I'd have to say that's seldom true.  If someone isn't worth much, or isn't doing their job, they don't make a living and they leave the business.  People don't stay in this business indefinitely without giving world class service and earning what they make.  If you're good, you do well.  If you're not, you leave the business.
